Yesterday, Trump’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, said Operation Metro Surge was a success and announced that it’s over.
But Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother and poet, is dead. Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse who cared for veterans, is dead. Both were American citizens. Both were killed by federal immigration agents on the streets of Minneapolis. Many others have been beaten and illegally detained. Thousands have been traumatized by the operation’s Gestapo-like tactics.
No one has been held accountable. Not a single agent has been charged.
A success?
And now, as of midnight tonight, the Department of Homeland Security is shutting down because Congress can’t even agree on whether ICE agents should be required to wear body cameras, take off their masks, and carry warrants.
Two Americans were killed by their own government, and Congress left town for a ten-day vacation rather than pass basic accountability measures.
Yet Homan praises the operation that put 3,000 federal agents on the streets of an American city, arrested 4,000 people, and left behind what Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called “catastrophic” damage to neighborhoods and businesses.
Homan thanked state officials for their “cooperation.” He said ICE was a “legitimate law enforcement agency.”
He did not say the names of Renee Good or Alex Pretti.
Moments like this cause people to leave MAGA. They don’t leave loudly or all at one time. They leave quietly, in living rooms, group chats, and in late-night conversations. Before I publicly left MAGA, I left privately.
