Ken Paxton has just defeated four-term incumbent John Cornyn to become the Republican nominee for the now-open Texas Senate seat in November.
He’ll face off with James Talarico, a widely popular Democrat who looks to have a chance of flipping the seat for the first time in decades — and that chance just increased precipitously.
Before last night, Talarico was facing an incumbent, someone Texans considered to be a steady hand on the wheel.
But today, the winds have changed.
Once again, Trump has backed a corrupt extremist with a criminal history. He put his thumb on the scale for a man who most of the state associates with impeachment, indictment, fraud, and living above the law.
MAGA candidates like Paxton may be able to win primaries. But they’re toxic in a general election. And no matter what happens, they’re poisoning our politics, moving the Republican Party and our country in a more corrupt direction.
A victory for a guy like Paxton sends a message to our country about who Trump cares about, the kind of person he associates with, and where his priorities are.
People have already begun to see exactly who Trump is. Right now, they’re seeing it every time they go to pump their gas. And with this Paxton endorsement, they’re seeing that, far from “draining the swamp,” Trump invites corruption into their government.
MAGA doesn’t have the momentum to keep this charade going.
