The Fourth of July has never been a partisan holiday.
The Fourth has always been a time of national unity and pride — a time when Democrats and Republicans put aside their differences to celebrate the history of our great nation.
President Obama never stood on stage and declared that the Fourth was somehow a celebration of him and his administration.
But that’s what President Trump has done, and it’s exactly why Americans across the country feel uncomfortable joining in the festivities in DC this year.
It’s a shame, because this is America’s 250th birthday.
But Trump has chosen to mark it with “The Great American State Fair” on the National Mall, which has remained eerily quiet all week.
Why?
Because Trump has turned the Fourth of July, our shared national holiday, into a referendum on support for him.
He personally led an “America is Back” kickoff eventon June 24, complete with jet flyovers.
He gave a campaign-style speech on the fairgrounds this week.
Every musical act that had been scheduled hastily withdrew once they realized they’d be publicly associated with MAGA.
And if his empty “state fair” weren’t bad enough, he’s planning to disrupt the traditional fireworks on the Mall with a Fourth of July Trump rally.
Fireworks on the National Mall are a DC tradition. People from all over the city — and even the country — come to enjoy them every year. These are people from every political background.
They are not there to participate in a Trump rally.
Trump is emptying out the National Mall because his national support is draining away. There’s never been a clearer image of where he stands with the American people than the empty fairgrounds where just a handful of people turned out.
It couldn’t be clearer: people aren’t buying what he’s selling anymore.
That’s why Leaving MAGA has a critical role to play in the months ahead.
We know people are tired of Trump.
They’re not going the extra mile to turn up to his events anymore.
Doubt is creeping in.
We need to strike while the iron is hot. To declare independence from MAGA.
