I saw where this train was heading years ago. At first, I had trouble accepting it — I nervously watched out the window as we rode past red flag after red flag.
But finally, I hit my breaking point. Even the sunk cost fallacy couldn’t keep me in such a toxic community, supporting such a dangerous man anymore.
And I know from the messages flooding my inbox that thousands of others are hitting theirs right now. Some have been wrestling with doubt for days. Others for months, even years.
They need to hear that it’s okay to leave. It’s time — too many red lines have been crossed. If they’re having doubts, they’re not alone.
“I told you so” might feel cathartic, but research shows it doesn’t work. Empathy, shared context, and community are the strongest tools we have to pull people out of extremism.
